Codex Committee launched a new food safety standards

After 3 days of the meeting in Geneva (15-17/8), the Committee on food standards (Codex) of the UN passed new safety standard for impurities in the infant milk powder and rice.

700 delegates from 170 countries attended the meeting to set out the standards to help ensure a safe and nutritious food.

The latest recommendations were put forward including the acceptable maximum level for lead in children's milk powder (do not remove all lead compounds from milk powder at this point) was 0, 01mg/1 kg of milk powder for children-half lead before.

Infants and young children are a special audience vulnerable by poison of lead. Babies and small children suffer profound and long-term health damage, especially to the developing brain and nervous system, can cause the child to lose the ability to study if contaminated with lead.

According to this Commission, long-term exposure to arsenic can cause cancer and lesions on the skin. Arsenic was also related to the development, heart disease, diabetes and damage to the nervous system and brain.

Arsenic is often present with high concentrations in groundwater and soils in some parts of the world. Toxic ingredients that can penetrate the food chain when plant uptake from soil and water. Rice can attract more arsenic than other crops and because of this is essential so if exposed to arsenic, health will be compromised.

According to the VOA, also in this meeting, the Codex Commission proposed limiting 8 veterinary drugs used in food for cattle meat, including Malachite Green, cholramphenicol, carbadox, furazolidone, nitrofural, chlorpromazine, olaquinadox and stilbenes (drugs against bacteria and growth stimulants) can cause serious consequences to human health and contribute to the cause of drug resistance status.=
