ASEAN Workshop on harmonization of food standards chemistry

The annual ASEAN Conference the 11th on the harmonization of food safety standards chemistry was held from 17-18/9/2014 in Vientiane, capital of Laos.

Conference program content include the report about ILSI activities on food safety standards; update of the 10 ASEAN countries about the standards in the field of food additives and contamination in food, updated database of ASEAN for additives and substances in food contamination in harmony with the Codex; updated database of ASEAN for food consumption used for exposure assessment and risk assessment.

At the workshop, plans to build a food classification system of ASEAN aims to build harmonious chemistry data base standards for chemicals in food contamination.

This is the workshop by life Science Institute (ILSI) International Southeast Asia pharmaceutical Bureau and Ministry of health of Laos food coordination organizations. Attending the seminar were representatives of the 10 ASEAN countries, the speakers come from Japan, Australia, Canada, the United States and a number of observers representing international food corporations such as Nestle, Coca-Cola, Steptoe Johnson &, Mead Johnson. Vietnam sent food safety Bureau representative and the Office of the Codex Commission.

The workshop heard presentations about the activities of the Technical Committee on food additives, Codex Alimentarius, food contamination, the Codex's Guide about the flavoring, Benefits and challenges of ich harmonization of chemical additives in food; some research results and proposals on Aflatoxin. Vietnam participated in the presentation of reports on the results of a survey the extent of harmonized technical regulation standards of the national food Codex standards.

At the workshop, plans to build a food classification system of ASEAN aims to build harmonious chemistry data base standards for chemicals in food contamination. The workshop noted the ability to build data base in the direction of the Codex, but specific differences of ASEAN countries, especially the variety of food groups may be the obstacle to this plan.

Chaired the Conference and representatives of ILSI consistency is maintaining active and harmonious chemistry seminar food safety standards in ASEAN is needed and urged ASEAN member countries to commit to participate. The time and location of the 12th meeting of the Organizing Committee will be announced later.=
